JAMES R. GATES : HALL'S SARSAPARILLA

In 1855 a Richard Hall established a wholesale and retail drug business at 143 and 145 Clay St. San Francisco, Cal. James R. Gate would start working for Richard in 1859 as a clerk. In 1863 James would become the owner and by 1867 he would partner with Hart F. Shepardson. This must have been short lived because by 1869 the San Francisco City Directory only lists James Gates alone at the address of 417 Sansome St. in San Francisco. By 1885 James R. Gates is listed as a wholesale dealer in drugs, medicines, chemicals, toilet articles and Hall's Sarsaparilla, Yellow dock and Iodide of Potass. Below is a photo of his sarsaparilla bottle its embossed HALL'S / SARSAPARILLA // J. R. GATES & CO. // PROPRIETORS S. F. The color is a rich aqua and is 9 3/8 inches tall.

The firm would incorporate in 1901. James gates would die the same year in 1901. The last year that the company was listed in the city directory was 1907. Ferann Vautier was listed as president and located at 113-115 Davis St. in San Francisco.
